We've tailored our license agreement over time in a fashion that would maximize our revenue from the software. We've got to pay rent, after all. Our business is with people who use our software for video compositing. We have little business with people creating/altering video related software. In such cases we comply with 3rd party licenses (mostly BSD style and/or LGPL based). In some cases we publish software under GNU public license (GPL, see Media Encoder/Converter)

I have in the past written lengthy statements about the GNU Public License. In a “ownership society” like here in Canada/US the main beneficiaries of the GPL are people with enough capital to either facilitate large scale electronic software distribution and/or enough capital to provide a functioning service and warranty framework for corporate users with GPL'ed products.

While our business model is not subject to public scrutiny, our license(s), by their nature are public documents. We believe that we (t@b) compete with mostly large (closed source) corporations for income related to video compositing. Just for historic reference (for laughs) I'll provide you with an earlier version of the t@b free license (below). We stopped using that license because it would have prevented lower income artists from earning a buck using our software. It'll give you an idea where we're coming from.

I might find that the "Terms of Use" in our zs4 license might be worded as follows in order to reflect my attitude.

This software is free for any kind of use with the following exceptions: Governmental, corporate or institutional use of this software is subject to a license fee. Any use on or within government, corporate or institutional property is subject to a license fee. Any use by (or on behalf of) an entity which is not a human individual is subject to a license fee.

Ok, I feel better now. So you do get money from it.
I have nothing against paying for software that does the job while not putting me in ethical jeopardy. I shelled out a fair sum for Final Cut Pro, because it was the only viable solution running on a unix-like platform.
Now I am very eager to out that zs4 thingy. If it works good it could keep me from buying a new mac and instead invest in a new linux box.
