I'm looking for a way to add a "thermometer" location meter to the bottom of a set of concatenated source clips. "Thermometer" means there will be a bar graph which starts from the left edge and goes to the right edge, corresponding to the total length of the concatenated clips. This bar should have a different user-specified color for each segment. Each segment also needs an anti-aliased text title within it. As the "thermometer" advances across the screen, the background of the bar becomes brighter. It's an advancing brightness bar, not a simple vertical line. Also, when a segment is being played, the corresponding text should be white. The text is dark grey when it's corresponding segment isn't being played. The idea is to provide a simple visual index by clip, position in the clip being played and position relative to the entire collection of clips. This is similar to the ESPN position scroller but less "busy".

Having said all of that, is it possible to put this beast together using ZS4?

I've been kicking this idea

I've been kicking this idea around for a while. The proportions could be done with ratios. The advancing highlight of the background can be done to a specific rectangular area based on field # relative to total # of fields. After that, I'd apply the anti-aliased titles with dynamic positioning, also based on ratios and, preferably, dynamically-generated so the edges look right when the highlight is behind the title. I see how parts can be easy with AviSynth and other parts are better done with a higher-level approach. Not sure how to do it efficiently, though. I kicked around the idea of the color bar being a static graphic and frame serving to AviSynth which would apply the text portions. I don't really like that approach because it would be nice if the length of the clips was persistent and used to modify the sizes and positions.

AviSynth isn't a "best" solution because it doesn't have any form of visual composite editing. Something where the segments of the final result could be individual clips or a series of clips would give the effect more usefulness for a variety of users.

Done properly, this should give a visually elegant scroll-bar based index and progression counter with an integrated index.
