General Features

Unlimited* number of audio, video and picture tracks (*limited only by available memory)
Unlimited number of video/audio effects for every track.
Produce video with a resolution of 8x8 or 16000x16000 (~200 Megapixels / frame) and many sizes in between (custom)
Full automation control for all track and effect variables using keyframes (cropping, zooming, panning, volume, rotation, opacity, key-color etc...)
Full cross integration of audio and video. (noise gates triggering video effects. video brightness controlling volume etc.) Here is an example video.

Looping of both audio and video signals simultaneously, with adjustable cross-fade on loop boundaries. (see musical loop tutorial)

Manipulate the flow of time, forward, backward, speed up and slow down smoothly. (see speed change tutorial)

Grouping of video/audio tracks into sub-groups (submixers) which can then be manipulated (faded/rotated/effected etc) as if they were a single track. (see submixer tutorial)

Audio Features

Up to 16 audio channels per track.
Audio mixing with unlimited amounts of sub-groups in unlimited subgroup levels (16x16x16... mixing limit)
Integral audio dsp running 48 kHz (16channels x 32bit) with 64bit normalization safety
Sox audio processing on all platforms. zs4 will implement a sox front end which seamlessly integrates with native features (in progress)
Musical time toolbars to allow for time related operations within the context of beats/bars/parts (see musical loop tutorial for an example)

Effects

Pixel/channel operations apply to r,g,b and a seperately, sometimes y and u/v as well:
expand (max dynamic range), invert, copy to/from alpha, swap with alpha etc...
Matrix operations: edge detect, blur, key smoother
Keys: rgb keying and chroma/yuv keying with superior quality
Pattern effects to seamlessly tile images in various formations include looping effects
Distortion effects: seamless bulge and squish, change point location, magnify, flowerify and remove perspective

Colour adjusters: adjust hue, saturation and lightness, adjust rgba, adjust yuv and tint

Miscellaneous: rotate move scale, wipe, dither, quantize...etc.
Effect Containers: oval inside/outside, rectangle inside/outside, keep alpha, keep non-alpha, mix to parent alpha, mix to parent non-alpha...
Build-your-own effect using above modular effects, grouped in (effect) containers and sequenced as desired..

Supported Formats

Supported formats depend on Operating System and installed codecs. Below is a table outlining the currently supported formats by OS.

Input FormatsWindowsLinuxOSX
iyuv/i420, yv12 and yuv9 avi, mjpg avi, mpng avi, wav, jpg, png, bmpxxx
Other avi files (depending on installed codecs)x

aif, snd, ico, cur, gifx

pnm, pbm, pgm, ppm, xpm, xbmxx
Output Formats

i420/iyuv-avi, motion-jpg avi, motion-png avi, wavxxx

If you find that your files are incompatible, check out t@b Media Converter, a graphical front-end for mencoder and sox.

Note: On Windows only DV type 2 avi files are supported.  DV type 1's will need to be converted using t@b Media Converter or some other program.
